In Fall 2016, five students began their journey in my lab, including me. By the end of that first semester, one had already left the program.

Fast-forward to December 2019: one student was set to graduate with a Ph.D. and start a postdoc, while another, also from our lab, was leaving the program without a degree, about to begin work as a prison security guard.

If you’d been a fly on the wall in our graduate student office, you’d have seen the difference.

Both students went to their classes and worked on their research, but their approaches were worlds apart. One delved deeply into their ideas, readily shifting gears when a project proved unfeasible. The other fixated on a perfect literature review and sporadically tried to gather data on an unworkable project.

Three years later, the first student had published seven first-author journal articles, completed a literature review, and written a full dissertation. The second hadn’t published a single paper and couldn’t complete a master’s thesis before being forced out of the program.

One student still held an undergraduate mindset, content to learn and summarize knowledge, while the other was focused on uncovering new insights and sharing them.

Research success comes down to key skills: identifying research ideas, designing projects, problem-solving, and effectively communicating findings. But despite their importance, research skills are rarely taught in a clear, actionable way.

This thought came into my head, as I realized just how little guidance I had.

So, I turned to journal articles I’d read, hoping to find a pattern. Seven hours later, after toggling between various articles and repeatedly deleting and retyping sentences, I had one paragraph—a rough patchwork of other articles’ introductions.

Two days later, I scrapped it altogether. This story is far too common for researchers, but it doesn’t have to be.

Unfortunately, the systems meant to teach researchers rely on trial and error under the intense pressure to “publish or perish”. But imagine if your research experience were different:

It’s Monday morning, and a rare calm fills the room as you settle into your chair. Your fingers glide across the keyboard, the words flowing effortlessly as if they’ve been waiting to pour onto the screen. Today, writing feels natural, as if the ideas themselves are telling their story through you.

Ding!

An email notification chimes. You hesitate, then decide to check. The subject line grabs your attention: “Congratulations on Your Submission.”

It’s from the journal. Heart pounding, you open the email. All you need is the first word: Congratulations.

Relief floods over you, warm and reassuring. You did it—you’re published.

Pride swells as you picture adding this to your CV, picturing the confidence it will bring to job applications, to your upcoming defense, to every critique that ever hinted you weren’t enough. You return to writing your paper knowing that this acceptance isn't a fluke. You know that you can do it again.

I constantly had new research ideas to share with my mentees, published seven first-author papers, and had five more in the pipeline. I presented at the American Society of Mass Spectrometry and other conferences, winning awards and recognition.

My postdoctoral work led to a full-time data scientist role at a Fortune 500 company—all of it possible because of the research skills I developed in my first two years of graduate school.
